The United Nations and partner organizations estimate that 299.4 million people will need humanitarian assistance and protection in 2024. These needs are driven by conflict, the climate crisis, and economic factors, according to the , the annual assessment of worldwide humanitarian needs and how to address them. This report will provide brief updates on the five crises— in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and Myanmar—with the largest populations in need of humanitarian assistance in 2024, according to the Global Humanitarian Overview. This list is far from an exhaustive summary of situations in need of humanitarian support. other crises in Syria, Ukraine, and Yemen have some of the most significant funding requirements. Some crises—such as those in the Central African Republic, Burundi, Burkina Faso, and Venezuela—are relative to their needs. By covering crises that have the most people in need, this report draws on both ‘forgotten’ crises, such as Myanmar, and crises that demand the largest humanitarian responses, such as Afghanistan. The report will conclude with policy recommendations related to these emergencies.

UNICEF Democratic Republic of the Congo Humanitarian Situation Report No.6 - Level 3 Emergency scale

02.01.2024 23:50 Country: Democratic Republic of the Congo Source: UN Children's Fund Please refer to the attached file. Highlights The scale and complexity of the ongoing conflict resulted in new massive displacements notably in North Kivu putting children at risk. Close to 3,400 unaccompanied children or children separated from their caregivers have been assisted in the past five months with a sharp increase in the number of children requiring assistance in the past month. DRC is facing the worst cholera outbreak in six years with over 28,000 notified cases reported in North Kivu alone. The cholera outbreak is expanding in the IDPs sites following the new population movements Since June 2023, UNICEF has reached nearly 1.3 million people across the crisis-affected areas representing 45% per cent of the ambitious scale-up target. UNICEF received only 3 per cent of the funding required since the declaration of the L3 scale up. Funding remains a challenge in attaining the life-saving and acute protection assistance scale-up targets.
