DR Congo: Factsheet: Rusayo camp for internally displaced people - February 2024

The relentless conflict in North Kivu has been forcing people from their homes for years. They leave behind their houses, most of their possessions, their lives and their livelihoods. Since January 2023, the number of people arriving in Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu, grew to unprecedented levels. On its outskirts, at Rusayo, the camp emerged to provide shelter and safety for those arriving from Masisi territory, which in early 2023 was the frontline in the war between the M23 and the FARDC. Two sites around Goma already existed in Kanyaruchinya and Munigi, where those fleeing Rutshuru territory had been taking refuge since July 2022. In January 2023, 45,000 people were housed at the camp in Rusayo. Now, February 2024, the camp is home to 95,000 people. In recent days and weeks, the intensification of the conflict has caused a dramatic uptick in displacement as the frontlines move closer to Goma. 135,000 people have fled from Bweremana, Shasha and Sake towards Goma from towns and villages now engulfed by violence. Since 7 February, 1,800 have been recorded as new arrivals in Rusayo, though populations movements are constantly changing as the waves of the conflict around Sake continue. Those fleeing conflict urgently need shelter, food, sanitation and water.
