Democratic Republic of the Congo – Increased conflict intensity

ReliefWeb: Updates by Country 14.02.2024 21:20 Country: Democratic Republic of the Congo Source: European Commission's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations An escalation in the intensity of the conflict between armed forces of the DRC and their allies against the Rwanda-supported M23 is heavily impacting civilians in the towns of Mweso, Bambo, Katsiru, Sake and Goma in North Kivu. Heavy artillery and mortars falling close to hospitals, schools and displacement camps led to an influx of wounded to Goma’s Ndosho Hospital supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross . On 7 February alone, the fighting resulted in 58 people wounded by weapons and mortars – 31 of them civilians. The fighting also led to new massive displacement of around 135,000 people to Goma and 100,000 into South Kivu and is severely restricting humanitarian access to hundreds of thousands of people in need. The sites for IDPs in Goma are overloaded and cannot absorb new arrivals. Under International Humanitarian Law parties to the conflict must take all precautionary measures to spare civilians and civilian infrastructure.
